Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare surgical techniques for pilonidal sinus treatment.
  • To evaluate outcomes including healing time, hospitalization, and recurrence rates.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 111 patients with pilonidal sinus treated surgically between 1997 and 1999.
  • Surgical methods included marsupialization, open excision, and primary suture technique.

Main Results:

  • Marsupialization (n=63) had a healing time of 27.3 days and 6.35% recurrence.
  • Primary suture technique (n=19) showed faster healing (11.7 days) but higher recurrence (57.8%).
  • Open excision (n=29) had the longest healing time (46.4 days) with 3.45% recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Marsupialization is the surgical method of choice for uncomplicated pilonidal disease, offering low recurrence and acceptable healing.
  • Open excision is preferred for large, inflamed, or recurrent pilonidal sinus cases.
