Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • Ten recreational athletes (5 male, 5 female) completed 18 steady-state and interval training sessions over 6 weeks.
  • Measures included oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), blood lactate, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and session-RPE (sRPE).
  • External work, Banister's TRIMP, Lucia's TRIMP, HR, and RPE-based methods were analyzed for validity and reliability.

Main Results:

  • External work demonstrated the highest correlation with total VO2, showing superior criterion validity.
  • Heart rate (HR) exhibited good test-retest reliability (3.9% CV), while RPE 6-20 showed moderate reliability (8.5% CV).
  • Banister's TRIMP (15.6% CV), Lucia's TRIMP (10.7% CV), and sRPE (28.1% CV) displayed poor test-retest reliability.

Conclusions:

  • External work is the most valid and reliable method for quantifying training load in recreational athletes.
  • HR-based TRIMP methods and RPE-based methods demonstrate poor reliability for training load assessment.
  • Future research should focus on refining subjective and HR-based measures or prioritizing external work for training load monitoring.
