Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

655
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...

Drug Accumulation During Multiple Dosing: Repetitive IV Injections

527
Calculating drug dosage and accumulation in multiple-dose regimens is crucial for achieving therapeutic efficacy while avoiding toxicity. This involves determining the plasma drug concentrations over time to optimize dosing schedules. The principle of superposition is fundamental in this process, allowing for the prediction of drug concentration in plasma following multiple doses based on single-dose data. The principle of superposition asserts that the plasma concentration-time curves from...

Pharmaceutical Poisoning: Potential Scenarios

116
Pharmaceutical poisoning can occur through various channels, impacting an estimated 2 million hospitalized patients in the U.S. annually with serious adverse drug responses. These scenarios encompass both therapeutic uses, such as drug toxicity, where even standard dosages can lead to severe central nervous system depression, and non-therapeutic exposures, including accidental ingestion by children, and environmental and occupational exposures.Unintentional poisonings often involve exploratory...

Drug Accumulation During Multiple Dosing: Intermittent IV Infusions

423
Intermittent intravenous (IV) infusion is a method of drug administration where medications are delivered over short infusion periods followed by intervals of no drug delivery. This approach helps to prevent sustained high drug concentrations in the bloodstream, reducing the risk of adverse effects associated with prolonged exposure. Unlike continuous infusion, steady-state concentrations may not be achieved during a single dosing cycle but can be reached through repeated...

Acute Kidney Injury V: Interprofessional Care

527
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) requires a collaborative healthcare approach to restore renal function and prevent complications. Essential management strategies involve monitoring fluid and electrolyte balance, adjusting medications, initiating dialysis when necessary, and providing nutritional support.Fluid and Electrolyte ManagementFluid Monitoring: Regularly monitoring body weight, central venous pressure, and urine output helps detect fluid imbalances early. Patient intake and output are...

IV Infusion to Oral Dosing: Conversion Methods

212
The development of extended-release formulations has facilitated the transition from intravenous to oral medication, offering a more convenient and patient-friendly approach to drug administration. This transition, however, requires careful management to ensure that therapeutic drug levels are maintained, preserving efficacy and avoiding adverse effects. Understanding pharmacokinetic principles and dosage calculations is critical during this process.Pharmacokinetics of the...

Area of Science:

  • Health Professions Education
  • Interprofessional Education
  • Pharmacology Education

Background:

  • Interprofessional collaborative patient-centered care (IPCPC) enhances healthcare quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Drug-related morbidity is a significant driver of healthcare costs, necessitating IPCPC.
  • Insufficient educational preparation for IPCPC practitioners has hindered past efforts, emphasizing the need for pre-licensure interprofessional education (IPE).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and student satisfaction of a pilot interprofessional education (IPE) class focused on rational drug use (RDU) and prescription.
  • To evaluate the impact of learning outcomes and class organization on student satisfaction.
  • To gauge student interest in future IPE initiatives for RDU.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot IPE class on RDU was conducted involving 24 nursing students and 88 medical students.
  • Small group activities utilized a case study focusing on rational drug choice and prescription writing from both medical and nursing perspectives.
  • A post-activity questionnaire assessed student satisfaction, learning outcomes, and class organization/delivery.

Main Results:

  • Of 108 students, 74% completed the questionnaire, reporting satisfaction (mean weighted score [mws] = 0.8).
  • Learning outcomes (mws = 1.0) significantly contributed to satisfaction (P < 0.05) compared to organization/delivery (mws = 0.6).
  • A majority of students (84-94%) agreed objectives were met, desired more classes, and valued interaction with other professionals.

Conclusions:

  • Students demonstrate a clear appetite for interprofessional education (IPE) in rational drug use (RDU).
  • The study highlights challenges in developing effective IPE curricula.
  • Findings can inform the development of future IPE curricula for RDU.
