The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

6.1K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

Vaccine injury compensation claims in Germany decreased significantly from 1976-1999. Analysis of these adverse event reports highlights the need for better surveillance systems for immunisation safety.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Immunisation Safety

Context:

  • Decreased infectious diseases and complications increase focus on vaccine-associated adverse events.
  • Analysis of German vaccine injury compensation data from 1976-1999.

Purpose:

  • To analyze trends in vaccine injury compensation claims in Germany.
  • To identify factors influencing reported adverse events following immunisation.

Summary:

  • Accepted vaccine injury compensation claims decreased from 1976-1990 (1139/4569) to 1991-1999 (389/2543).
  • 38% of accepted claims involved the smallpox vaccine, no longer recommended.
  • Regional variations suggest healthcare system, political, and social factors influence adverse event rates.

Impact:

  • Current data limitations hinder epidemiological and causality assessments of adverse events.
  • Improved surveillance, including individual case documentation and centralized expert review, is crucial for enhancing immunisation safety and transparency.
