  • Maximum bladder volume has been proposed as a simple screening measure for DO.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of maximum bladder volume, recorded via bladder diary, as a screening tool for detrusor overactivity (DO).

Main Methods:

  • Urodynamic traces from 577 women were analyzed.
  • Maximum bladder volume data from bladder diaries were compared with urodynamic categorizations (normal, stress incontinence, mixed incontinence, DO).
  • Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to assess diagnostic accuracy.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in median maximum voided volume was found between women with DO and other categories.
  • Significant differences were observed in median urodynamic variables across categories.
  • ROC curve analysis revealed poor sensitivity and specificity for maximum bladder volume in screening for DO.

Conclusions:

  • Maximum voided volume from a three-day bladder diary is not a discriminatory screening test for detrusor overactivity (DO).
  • Urodynamic assessment remains crucial for accurate diagnosis of DO.
