Background:

  • Digital whole slide imaging (WSI) is an emerging technology in pathology.
  • Little is known about pathologists' current practice patterns and perceptions of WSI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To survey pathologists on their experience, practice patterns, and perceptions of WSI.
  • To characterize the adoption and utilization of WSI in pathology.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study surveyed 252 pathologists nationally (2011-2013).
  • Survey included questions on experience, WSI use, and perceptions using a six-point Likert scale.
  • Descriptive statistics were used to summarize agreement and characterize use.

Main Results:

  • 49% of pathologists had WSI experience, primarily for CME, board exams, and teaching.
  • Most agreed WSI allows accurate diagnoses (79%) and is useful for second opinions (88%).
  • A majority found WSI too slow for routine use (78%), with equal split on adoption (51% yes, 49% no).

Conclusions:

  • Positive perceptions of WSI slightly outweigh negative ones.
  • Understanding current practice patterns is crucial for facilitating WSI adoption.
  • Further research is needed as WSI technology disseminates in pathology practices.
