Summary

A military member experienced right shoulder pain and hand numbness. Doppler ultrasound revealed a blood clot in his right subclavian and axillary veins, indicating deep vein thrombosis.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • A 34-year-old military member presented with worsening right shoulder pain, paresthesias in the first three digits of the right hand, and right upper extremity swelling.
  • These symptoms prompted referral to physical therapy and subsequent diagnostic imaging.

Observation:

  • Doppler ultrasonography was utilized to investigate the patient's symptoms.
  • The imaging procedure focused on the vascular structures of the right upper extremity.

Findings:

  • The Doppler ultrasound revealed an occlusive thrombus.
  • The thrombus was located in the right distal subclavian and axillary veins.

Implications:

  • This finding suggests a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) affecting the upper extremity.
