Summary

Fractional CO2 laser therapy effectively treated recalcitrant postinflammatory hyperpigmentation in a Fitzpatrick skin type III patient. Two sessions led to complete lesion clearance without complications, demonstrating its efficacy.

Background:

  • Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common skin condition resulting from inflammation.
  • Topical treatments are first-line, but recalcitrant PIH poses a clinical challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of fractional CO2 laser in treating refractory postinflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Main Methods:

  • A case study of a 24-year-old woman with Fitzpatrick skin type III and recalcitrant PIH.
  • Treatment involved two sessions of fractional CO2 laser with a one-month interval.

Main Results:

  • Complete clearance of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation was observed after two treatment sessions.
  • No complications were reported following the fractional CO2 laser treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Fractional CO2 laser, when used with conservative settings and appropriate post-treatment care, can be highly effective for recalcitrant PIH.
