Rheumatic Heart Disease I: Introduction

1.0K
Rheumatic heart disease or RHD is a chronic condition that results from rheumatic fever, causing permanent damage to the heart valves.Etiology and Risk FactorsIt primarily arises from rheumatic fever, an inflammatory disease that can develop after untreated or inadequately treated group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis. Streptococcus spreads through direct contact with oral or respiratory secretions. While the bacteria are the causative agents, factors like malnutrition, overcrowding, poor...

Rheumatic Heart Disease IV: Nursing Management

484
AssessmentA comprehensive assessment is essential in managing a patient with rheumatic heart disease (RHD). Begin with obtaining a detailed medical history, including recent streptococcal infections, a history of rheumatic fever, or previously diagnosed rheumatic heart disease. Assess the patient for symptoms such as fever, chest pain, widespread joint pain (arthralgia), tachycardia, pericardial friction rub, muffled heart sounds, heart murmurs, peripheral edema, subcutaneous nodules, and...

Models of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention I

2.8K
A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

655
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...

Rheumatic Heart Disease III: Medical Management

544
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) management can be divided into two main strategies: prevention and long-term management.Primary PreventionPrimary prevention focuses on timely diagnosis and management of group A streptococcal pharyngitis to prevent acute rheumatic fever. The most widely used antibiotic for treating this condition is intramuscular benzathine penicillin G.Acute Rheumatic Fever TreatmentThe primary treatment goal for a patient diagnosed with acute rheumatic fever is to suppress the...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching II: Planning and Implementation

2.1K
Planning for learning involves the development of a teaching plan. Teaching plans are similar to nursing care plans—both follow the steps of the nursing process. Planning in the teaching process involves setting goals and outcomes. Here, goals identify what a patient needs to achieve to understand a healthcare topic better, whereas the outcomes are the action to be performed by the patient to achieve the goal within a timeframe. For example, if the goal is to educate the patient about...

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Health Education
  • Quality of Life Research

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) significantly impacts patients' self-care abilities and quality of life (QOL).
  • Developing targeted educational interventions is crucial for managing RA and its physical limitations.
  • The PRECEDE-PROCEED model offers a framework for designing effective patient education programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the planning and development of a Rheumatoid Arthritis Patient Education Program (RAPEP).
  • To address self-care behaviors and adaptation to physical limitations in RA patients.
  • To enhance the QOL for individuals with RA.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review on RA, its symptoms, functional disabilities, and existing educational programs.
  • Cross-sectional survey of 181 RA outpatients in Yazd, Iran, to inform program development.
  • Application of the PRECEDE model components to guide survey design and program planning.

Main Results:

  • Chronic pain in RA leads to reduced role functioning, health perception, and physical functioning.
  • Self-care behaviors are significant modifiable factors influencing pain and functional limitations in RA.
  • Higher levels of knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, enabling factors, and social support correlate with improved self-care behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • The PRECEDE model provided a robust framework for developing the RAPEP for RA patients in Yazd.
  • The planned educational program aims to improve RA patient outcomes.
  • Further research is recommended to evaluate the effectiveness of the RAPEP.
