Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Blended learning approach improves teaching in a problem-based learning environment in orthopedics - a pilot study.

    Background:

    • E-learning is increasingly used in medical education, but research needs to focus on knowledge and skill enhancement beyond student satisfaction.
    • This study investigates the impact of a blended learning program within a problem-based learning framework for orthopedic and traumatology students.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a blended learning program on knowledge and skill acquisition in orthopedic and traumatology students.
    • To compare the outcomes of students participating in the NESTOR (network for students in traumatology and orthopedics) blended learning program with those in a traditional problem-based learning setting.

    Main Methods:

    • A pilot study involving 53 students in a problem-based learning course.
    • Participants completed pre- and post-course written tests, a final written test, an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), and an evaluation questionnaire.
    • Outcomes were compared between NESTOR users and non-users.

    Main Results:

    • Students reported highly positive experiences with the blended learning program.
    • Significant knowledge enhancement was observed in both groups immediately after the course and at the final test (p < 0.001).
    • NESTOR users demonstrated higher scores in post-tests compared to non-users, but no significant differences were found in the OSCE results.

    Conclusions:

    • The blended learning approach positively impacted student knowledge enhancement and satisfaction.
    • Further research is needed to explore the potential of blended learning and internet-based technologies for improving practical clinical skills in medical education.
