Blood vessel formation starts early during embryonic development, around day 7. In the extraembryonic yolk sac, mesodermal precursor cells called hemangioblast proliferate and differentiate into angioblast. Angioblasts express vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 or VEGFR2, which binds VEGF-A, a proangiogenic factor, guiding blood vessel formation. Angiosarcoma patients frequently develop consumptive coagulopathy, a condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This coagulopathy often resolves with treatment but recurs with disease progression, highlighting its link to angiosarcoma activity.

Background:

  • Angiosarcoma is a rare and aggressive vascular malignancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of consumptive coagulopathy in patients with angiosarcoma.
  • To investigate the relationship between DIC and disease activity in angiosarcoma.
  • To compare the incidence of DIC in angiosarcoma versus epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.

  • Retrospective review of 42 angiosarcoma patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2013.
