This study reports morular metaplasia in stomach polyps, detailing its unique immunophenotype. This finding suggests a link between fundic gland polyposis and the Wnt/β-catenin pathway disruption seen in other morule-forming tumors.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology and Pathology
- Molecular Biology
Background:
- Morular metaplasia is rarely documented in gastric settings.
- Fundic gland polyps (FGPs) are common gastric lesions, typically benign.
Observation:
- A case of sporadic FGP with low-grade dysplasia in a 47-year-old woman showed morular metaplasia formation.
- Immunophenotyping revealed morules were CD10, CDX2, and nuclear Beta-catenin positive, but negative for p63, Ki67, chromogranin, synaptophysin, and Ck20.
Findings:
- This is the first report describing the immunophenotype of morules within gastric fundic gland polyposis.
- The observed immunophenotype suggests a potential role for the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in the development of these morules.
Implications:
- The findings suggest a biological similarity between fundic gland polyposis with morules and other tumors exhibiting morule formation and Wnt/β-catenin pathway dysfunction.
- This study contributes to understanding the pathogenesis of rare gastric lesions and their molecular underpinnings.
