Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and levels of burnout among ICU nurses and respiratory therapists.
  • To identify specific dimensions of burnout experienced by these healthcare professionals.

Main Methods:

  • A two-part survey was administered to assess burnout.
  • Part 1 collected demographic information and work hours.
  • Part 2 utilized the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS).

Main Results:

  • The study included 213 participants: 151 nurses (71%) and 62 respiratory therapists (29%).
  • 54% of participants reported moderate to high emotional exhaustion (EE).
  • 40% reported moderate to high depersonalization (DP), and 40.6% reported low personal accomplishment (PA).

Conclusions:

  • ICU nurses and respiratory therapists exhibit high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization.
  • Lower personal accomplishment was also prevalent among these healthcare providers.
  • Findings underscore the need for interventions to address burnout in critical care settings.
