Five new prenylated chalcones from Desmodium renifolium, renifolins D-H, were identified. Compounds 2 and 3 showed significant cytotoxicity against A549 lung cancer cells.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Pharmacology
- Medicinal Plant Research
Background:
- Desmodium renifolium is a plant with potential medicinal properties.
- Prenylated chalcones are a class of natural compounds with diverse biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new prenylated chalcones from Desmodium renifolium.
- To evaluate the cytotoxic activity of these compounds against various tumor cell lines.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation using 1D and 2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
- Cytotoxicity assays using five human tumor cell lines.
Main Results:
- Five new prenylated chalcones, named renifolins D-H (compounds 1-5), were successfully isolated and identified.
- Compounds 2 and 3 demonstrated notable cytotoxicity against A549 lung cancer cells.
- The IC50 values for compounds 2 and 3 against A549 cells were 2.8 μM and 2.2 μM, respectively.
Conclusions:
- Desmodium renifolium is a source of novel prenylated chalcones with potential anticancer properties.
- Renifolins D and E (compounds 2 and 3) exhibit promising cytotoxicity against A549 cells, warranting further investigation.
