Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

978
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

884
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

770
Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual...

Depression: Overview

1.2K
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

27.3K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

In trauma patients, in-hospital depression did not significantly correlate with recovery. However, rehabilitation benefits, not depression levels, appeared more predictive of perceived patient recovery outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Trauma care
  • Psychiatry
  • Rehabilitation medicine

Background:

  • Depression significantly impacts illness course, recovery, and outcomes across patient populations.
  • Depression in trauma patients is often under-recognized, hindering rehabilitation participation and delaying recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate in-hospital depression in trauma patients.
  • To correlate depression with self-reported recovery 6 months post-discharge.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive study at an urban level II trauma center.
  • Utilized a depression scale and chart review for in-hospital assessment.
  • Correlated results with patient-reported recovery via follow-up phone calls.

Main Results:

  • No significant correlation found between recovery and depression scale scores, injury severity, or length of stay.
  • Patients who received rehabilitation facility care reported higher recovery rates than those who did not.
  • Rehabilitation benefits, rather than in-hospital depression, were more predictive of perceived recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Medical funding for rehabilitation appears more influential on perceived recovery than in-hospital depression.
  • Study limitations included population changes and administrative restructuring.
  • Further research is needed to support nurses in evidence-based practice.
