Summary

This study shows the TightRope® system offers a successful surgical technique for canine hip dislocation (coxofemoral luxation) repair. Long-term outcomes indicate good to excellent limb function and owner satisfaction.

Background:

  • Coxofemoral luxation is a common orthopedic emergency in dogs.
  • Traditional repair methods can have variable success rates.
  • The TightRope® system offers a novel approach to prosthetic ligament stabilization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To detail the surgical technique for a modified hip toggle stabilization using the TightRope® system.
  • To evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes and owner satisfaction following this repair method.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case series of 17 dogs undergoing coxofemoral luxation repair with the TightRope® system.
  • Medical records and radiographs were reviewed from July 2008 to July 2010.
  • Long-term follow-up (≥12 months) included owner telephone interviews and objective gait analysis in 6 dogs.

Main Results:

  • Follow-up averaged 24 months (range, 12-43 months) for 17 dogs.
  • Objective gait analysis in 6 dogs revealed equal pelvic limb use.
  • Owners reported good to excellent limb function and no pain in living dogs; no osteoarthritis progression was noted on radiographs.

Conclusions:

  • Modified hip toggle stabilization with the TightRope® system provides a favorable clinical outcome for coxofemoral luxation.
  • This technique demonstrates high owner acceptance and satisfaction.
  • The TightRope® system serves as an effective prosthetic ligament for hip stabilization.
