Summary

This study found prostate cancer in 13.3% of men with acute urinary retention, a lower incidence than previously reported. Prostatic biopsy is not recommended for patients with a benign prostate exam.

Background:

  • Acute urinary retention (AUR) is a common urological emergency.
  • The incidence of prostate cancer in patients presenting with AUR has historically been reported higher.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the incidence of prostate cancer in patients presenting with acute urinary retention.
  • To assess the diagnostic yield of prostatic biopsy in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 90 patients with AUR across two medical centers.
  • Inclusion of pre-retention history, prostate examination, perineal prostate biopsy, and follow-up.
  • Analysis of malignancy rates based on examination findings and subsequent treatments.
