Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

1.2K
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Summary

Transanal resection of rectal tumors using the single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) technique is feasible. This minimally invasive approach offers a viable alternative for tumor removal when specialized equipment is unavailable.

Area of Science:

  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is a validated technique for rectal tumors.
  • High costs of specialized anoscopes limit availability in some centers.
  • Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) offers an alternative transanal resection method.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of transanal tumor resection using the SILS technique.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 5 cases undergoing transanal resection with an SILS device.
  • Assessment of clinical, surgical, and oncological outcomes.
  • Review of tumor characteristics, operating time, and complications.

Main Results:

  • Median tumor distance from anal margin: 7.2 cm; median tumor size: 3 cm.
  • Median operating time: 75 minutes; one case of postsurgical rectorrhagia.
  • Histopathology included adenocarcinoma, adenomas, and benign mucosa with negative margins in all cases.

Conclusions:

  • Transanal resection of rectal tumors using the SILS technique is a feasible procedure.
  • Further investigation with larger series and prospective studies is warranted.
