Assessment of apical radial pulse01:25

Assessment of apical radial pulse

1.6K
Apical-Radial (A-R) Pulse Assessment
The A-R pulse assessment involves simultaneous evaluation of the apical and radial pulses. When the apical and radial pulse rates vary, this assessment helps identify a pulse deficit.

Summary

Transradial access, a minimally invasive technique, offers fewer complications than femoral artery access for alcohol septal ablation. This US case report details its successful application in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Interventional Cardiology
  • Vascular Access

Background:

  • Transradial access is associated with lower access-site complications compared to transfemoral access.
  • Previous European studies suggest feasibility of transradial access for alcohol septal ablation.
  • No US-based reports on transradial alcohol septal ablation have been published.

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old male with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was considered for alcohol septal ablation.
  • The procedure was performed using the right radial artery approach.
  • The technical aspects of the transradial technique were observed.

Findings:

  • Successful alcohol septal ablation was achieved via the right radial artery.
  • The transradial approach was technically feasible in this US patient.

  • The patient tolerated the procedure well, with no immediate access-related complications.
  • Implications:

    • This case report suggests transradial access is a viable and potentially safer alternative for alcohol septal ablation in the US.
    • Further research and larger studies are warranted to confirm the safety and efficacy of this approach.
    • This technique may expand treatment options for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients requiring septal ablation.
