    Summary

    CD40 expression in pancreatic cancer cells and the presence of peritumoral lymphocytes may indicate prognosis. Further research is needed to confirm their role as reliable prognostic markers for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

    Background:

    • CD40, a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily, is widely expressed across various cell types.
    • Its broad expression suggests a significant role in physiological processes and disease development.
    • Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive malignancy with limited therapeutic options.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the expression of CD40 in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
    • To determine the association between CD40 expression and clinicopathological features.
    • To evaluate the correlation of CD40 expression with patient survival outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Immunohistochemistry was employed to assess CD40 expression in 53 surgical specimens of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
    • Clinicopathological parameters and patient outcomes were analyzed in relation to CD40 expression levels.
    • The presence of peritumoral lymphocytes was also evaluated.

    Main Results:

    • CD40 expression was detected in 24.5% of pancreatic cancer specimens.
    • Peritumoral lymphocytes were observed in 84.9% of the cases.
    • While CD40-positive tumors and the presence of peritumoral lymphocytes showed trends towards prolonged disease-free and overall survival, these differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • CD40 expression on pancreatic cancer cells and the peritumoral lymphocytic infiltrate may potentially serve as prognostic indicators.
    • These findings warrant further investigation in larger cohorts to validate their prognostic significance.
    • Understanding the role of CD40 in the tumor microenvironment could offer new therapeutic strategies for PDAC.
