Background:

  • The potential role of irisin in mediating coffee's metabolic effects is currently unknown.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the association between baseline irisin levels and metabolic profiles in humans.
  • To investigate whether caffeinated coffee consumption impacts irisin levels.

Main Methods:

  • Secondary analysis of a randomized trial involving 32 overweight, healthy coffee drinkers.
  • Participants consumed 5 cups daily of caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or water for eight weeks.
  • Statistical analyses included Spearman correlation and ANCOVA to assess irisin levels and metabolic parameters.

Main Results:

  • Irisin levels showed positive correlations with waist circumference (r=0.41, p=0.02), fat mass (r=0.44, p=0.01), and C-reactive protein (CRP) (r=0.47, p=0.007).
