Background:

  • Thyroid hormone (TH) alterations are implicated in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia.
  • Cognitive deficits are prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between normal variations in thyroid function and cognitive function in early PD patients without dementia.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty-four euthyroid early PD patients were assessed for thyroid status (TSH, tT3, fT4) and cognitive function via comprehensive neuropsychological tests.
  • Compared thyroid hormone levels and cognitive performance between PD patients with and without MCI.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in TH levels between PD patients with and without MCI.
  • Free thyroxine (fT4) levels showed an inverse association with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and tests of attention, visuospatial, and executive function.
  • Multiple regression analyses confirmed significant associations between fT4 concentrations and executive function and MMSE scores, after controlling for covariates.

Conclusions:

  • A relationship exists between thyroid status and cognitive function in euthyroid early PD patients.
  • Higher fT4 concentrations are associated with poorer executive function performance in this cohort.
