Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 80 patients with amebic liver abscess (ALA).
  • Patients were divided into two groups: solitary ALA (controls) and multiple ALAs (cases).
  • Colonoscopy was performed on all participants to assess colonic involvement.

Main Results:

  • Multiple ALAs were observed in 30% of patients, while solitary ALAs were present in 70%.
  • Colonic involvement (erythema, inflammation, ulceration) was found in 77.5% of ALA cases.
  • A higher percentage of patients with multiple ALAs (91.6%) exhibited colonic lesions compared to those with solitary ALAs (71.4%) (P=0.02).
  • Right and transverse colon involvement was significantly more common in multiple ALAs than solitary ALAs (P<0.0001).
  • Right colon involvement was present in all cases with colonic involvement.

Conclusions:

  • Colonic involvement is a common finding in over two-thirds of amebic liver abscess patients.
  • Right colon lesions are universally present when colonic involvement occurs.
  • Multiple amebic ALAs may be associated with colonic involvement extending beyond the hepatic flexure, potentially affecting multiple liver lobes.
