Summary

Background:

  • Rapid response teams (RRTs) are critical for improving patient outcomes in acute care settings.
  • Assessing the impact of RRT implementation on mortality rates is essential for healthcare quality improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between the implementation of rapid response teams and in-hospital mortality rates.
  • To analyze mortality trends before and after RRT deployment in a large cohort.

Main Methods:

  • An observational cohort study analyzed 471,062 adult patients across ten acute tertiary care hospitals in Washington State.
  • Mortality rates were compared between a 31-month pre-RRT period and a 31-month post-RRT period, controlling for severity of illness and comorbidities.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant improvement in in-hospital mortality was observed post-RRT implementation (Relative Risk = 0.76; 95% CI = 0.72-0.80; p < 0.001).
  • Six of ten hospitals demonstrated reduced mortality rates after RRT implementation.

Conclusions:

  • While RRT implementation was associated with improved mortality, the effect could not be solely attributed to RRTs due to concurrent declining mortality trends.
  • Further research is recommended to explore other objective outcomes and optimize RRT configurations for maximum effectiveness.
