Nerve fibres in the endometrium were found in 32.3% of women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF). Their presence did not affect infertility causes or IVF success, suggesting further research is needed.
Area of Science:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Gynecologic Pathology
- Endometrial Biology
Background:
- Endometrial nerve fibres are linked to endometriosis.
- Their presence in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) has not been studied.
- This study investigates endometrial innervation in IVF patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess nerve fibre presence in the endometrium of women undergoing IVF.
- To examine correlations between nerve fibres, infertility causes, and IVF success.
Main Methods:
- Prospective pilot study of 32 IVF patients.
- Endometrial biopsy performed on cycle days 21-23.
- Immunohistochemical staining used to identify nerve fibres.
Main Results:
- Nerve fibres identified in 32.3% of biopsies.
- No correlation found between nerve fibres and infertility aetiology.
- No association between nerve fibres and clinical pregnancy rates.
Conclusions:
- Nerve fibres are present in a significant portion of IVF patients' endometria.
- This may indicate underdiagnosis of endometriosis.
- Endometrial nerve fibres do not appear to impede implantation in IVF.
- Further research on the significance of endometrial nerve fibres in IVF is warranted.
