  • Developed a standardized syntax to paraphrase and compare 19 identified definitions of PhC.
  • Organized a moderated discussion with PCNE members and external experts to reach a consensus.

  • Identified 19 unique definitions of Pharmaceutical Care through literature and hand searches.
  • Paraphrased definitions using a standardized syntax focusing on provider, recipient, subject, outcome, and activities.
  • Achieved consensus on a new definition: "Pharmaceutical Care is the pharmacist's contribution to the care of individuals in order to optimize medicines use and improve health outcomes".

Conclusions:

  • A standardized syntax effectively facilitated the comparison of Pharmaceutical Care definitions.
  • Experts reached a consensus on a contemporary definition of Pharmaceutical Care applicable across diverse settings and regions.
  • The redefined Pharmaceutical Care definition aims to be relevant for current practice and globally applicable.
