  • To evaluate the impact of recurrent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) on cardiac function.
  • To assess diastolic mitral inflow and tissue Doppler features using echocardiography.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-three patients undergoing ECT without pre-existing cardiovascular conditions were studied.
  • Echocardiographic parameters were measured at baseline, after the 7th, and after the final ECT session.

Main Results:

  • Mitral E wave and tissue Doppler E' velocities showed no significant changes post-ECT.
  • Transmitral A wave velocity significantly increased after the 1st and 7th ECT sessions compared to baseline.

Conclusions:

  • An increase in mitral diastolic inflow A wave velocity was observed post-ECT.
  • This elevation may indicate acute sympathetic nervous system activation during ECT.
