Cyclic vaginal bleeding in prepubertal girls without any detected anomaly is rare. This study reports nine cases, highlighting the need for further understanding of this unexplained condition.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gynecology
- Reproductive Endocrinology
Background:
- Unexplained cyclic vaginal bleeding is a rare occurrence in prepubertal girls.
- Existing literature consists of small case series (4-11 cases).
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe nine cases of prepubertal girls with unexplained cyclic vaginal bleeding.
- To contribute to the limited existing literature on this rare condition.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective case series.
- Inclusion of girls with cyclic vaginal bleeding.
- Exclusion of uterine and vaginal anomalies via gynecological, hormonal, and echographic examinations.
Main Results:
- Nine prepubertal girls presented with cyclic vaginal bleeding.
- No uterine or vaginal abnormalities were found in any of the cases.
- Hormonal and echographic examinations revealed no abnormalities.
Conclusions:
- Unexplained cyclic vaginal bleeding can occur in prepubertal girls without identifiable abnormalities.
- Further research is needed to elucidate the pathophysiology and management of this rare condition.

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH...
