[Antibodies to cytomegaloviruses in blood donors]

The use of seronegative blood products is important to prevent transfusion-associated cytomegalovirus infection in immunocompromised patients. We have screened 3,458 normal blood donors for CMV-IgG-antibodies with an ELISA to receive a panel of seronegative donors and to determine the antibody prevalence. 1,948 donors were seropositive. Female donors had higher antibody prevalence than males in each age range tested.
