    Background:

    • Cardiac arrhythmias are a significant concern in cardiovascular patient management.
    • Understanding the presentation and clinical course of arrhythmias is crucial for effective treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the mode of presentation and clinical course of cardiac arrhythmias.
    • To analyze the types and prevalence of arrhythmias in a defined patient cohort.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of clinical data for patients managed for cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Inclusion criteria: patients admitted or seen as outpatients between May 1986 and March 1988.
    • Data analysis focused on arrhythmia types, patient demographics, underlying conditions, and outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Cardiac arrhythmias were identified in 1.07% of 5,768 admissions and in 21 outpatients.
    • Right bundle branch block was the most frequent arrhythmia (36 cases), followed by premature atrial/ventricular contractions and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) (15 cases each).
    • Most patients (38) had undergone corrective cardiac procedures; 8 had congenital heart lesions, and 3 had acquired cardiac pathology. Only 2 patients were symptomatic, and 1 sudden death occurred.

    Conclusions:

    • Cardiac arrhythmias, particularly right bundle branch block, are relatively uncommon but often associated with structural heart disease or prior cardiac interventions.
    • The majority of patients with arrhythmias in this cohort were asymptomatic, highlighting the importance of routine screening and monitoring.
