  • Analyzed the influence of partner's previous behavior, species, food accessibility, and dyad social tolerance on the subject's pulling tendency.

Main Results:

  • Chimpanzees and orangutans were the only species to significantly increase pulling when the partner could access the provided food.
  • No species demonstrated reciprocation, as subjects' pulling was not dependent on the partner's prior pulls, except possibly in one orangutan dyad.
  • Subjects understood the apparatus but rarely provided food to partners, indicating limited short-term, calculated reciprocity.

Conclusions:

  • Calculated reciprocity is not a common behavior in the tested primate species under these experimental conditions.
  • Short-term food exchanges are generally not reciprocated among these primates.
  • Further research may explore long-term interactions or different motivational factors influencing reciprocity.
