We developed a low-cost, solution-processable nanoparticulate ink for aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films. These films achieve high optical transparency and excellent electrical resistivity, suitable for transparent electrodes.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Thin Film Deposition
Background:
- Solution processable aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films are promising for low-cost transparent electrodes.
- Direct write processing offers scalable and cost-effective fabrication methods.
Purpose of the Study:
- To optimize a nanoparticulate ink for fabricating AZO thin films via ultrasonic spray deposition.
- To investigate the impact of ink additives and processing parameters on film properties.
Main Methods:
- Ultrasonic spray deposition of AZO nanoparticulate ink in air.
- Thermal processing of as-deposited films.
- Post-deposition reduction treatments (vacuum, rf plasma).
- Structural, optical, and electrical characterization.
Main Results:
- Optimized AZO films achieved >95% optical transparency and resistivity of 0.5 Ω cm, dropping to 7.0 × 10(-2) Ω cm after UV illumination.
- Ink additives significantly improved film quality, eliminating surface defects and cracks.
- AZO films with silane additive showed optical transparency comparable to glass.
Conclusions:
- Scalable, low-cost fabrication of high-performance AZO thin films is achievable using optimized nanoparticulate inks and direct write processing.
- Ink formulation is critical for controlling film morphology and optoelectronic properties.
- These AZO films are competitive alternatives to indium tin oxide for transparent electrode applications.
