Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently associated with sleep disturbances like insomnia and nightmares.
  • Objective evaluation of these sleep issues is challenging due to their subjective nature.
  • Traditional sleep studies like polysomnography are typically not indicated for PTSD-related sleep problems.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the existing literature on the use of actigraphy for evaluating sleep disturbances in patients with PTSD.
  • To assess the utility of actigraphy as a tool in the clinical management of PTSD-related sleep issues.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed using keywords related to actigraphy and PTSD.
  • The search yielded 11 results, from which 9 relevant studies were selected for review.
  • An additional relevant article was included through expert consultation.

Main Results:

  • Actigraphy has been utilized in research settings to monitor sleep disturbances in PTSD patients.
  • While actigraphy is established for circadian rhythm sleep disorders, its use in psychiatric clinics is infrequent.
  • Currently, there is no specific actigraphic data uniquely identifying PTSD-related sleep findings.

Conclusions:

  • Actigraphy can serve as a valuable supplementary tool alongside sleep diaries for assessing sleep and wake patterns in PTSD patients.
  • Its application in routine psychiatric practice for PTSD sleep evaluation is not yet widespread.
  • Further research may clarify the specific role and findings of actigraphy in PTSD.
