Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring01:23

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

5.7K
Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...

Errors occurring during blood pressure monitoring01:25

Errors occurring during blood pressure monitoring

1.6K
Blood pressure monitoring is a crucial clinical procedure in diagnosing and managing various cardiovascular conditions. Despite its significance, the accuracy of blood pressure measurements can be compromised by multiple factors, potentially leading to either falsely high or low readings. These inaccuracies are critical as they can significantly impact patient care. So, it is vital to understand these challenges deeply and adopt strategic approaches to minimize errors.
Several factors...

Summary

Consumer physical activity monitors show varying accuracy in estimating energy expenditure (EE). The BodyMedia FIT armband demonstrated the best agreement with criterion measures, while the Fitbit Zip also showed promising results for tracking daily activity.

Area of Science:

  • Wearable technology
  • Human physiology
  • Exercise science

Background:

  • Consumer-based monitors for physical activity and energy expenditure (EE) lack validated data.
  • Assessing the accuracy of these devices is crucial for reliable personal health tracking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity of energy expenditure (EE) estimates from various consumer physical activity monitors.
  • To compare monitor accuracy under free-living conditions against a criterion measure.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty healthy adults (30 males, 30 females) simultaneously wore eight different activity monitors.
  • Monitors included BodyMedia FIT, DirectLife, Fitbit One, Fitbit Zip, ActiGraph, Jawbone Up, and Basis B1 Band.
  • Energy expenditure (EE) was validated against a portable metabolic system (Oxycon Mobile) using mean absolute percent error and 95% equivalence testing.

Main Results:

  • The BodyMedia FIT armband had the lowest mean absolute percent error (9.3%).
  • Fitbit Zip (10.1%) and Fitbit One (10.4%) also showed relatively low errors.
  • BodyMedia FIT, Fitbit Zip, and NikeFuel Band estimates were within a 10% equivalence zone of indirect calorimetry.

Conclusions:

  • The BodyMedia FIT armband exhibited the strongest agreement for energy expenditure estimation.
  • The Fitbit Zip showed promising preliminary results for accuracy in activity monitoring.
