Summary

This study explored whether synovial fluid, a lubricating fluid in joints, could serve as a reliable alternative specimen in postmortem toxicology when blood is unavailable. The researchers tested 98 cases for cocaine and opiates, comparing synovial fluid results with blood, vitreous humor, and urine. They found that synovial fluid showed strong correlation with blood for most drugs but was less sensitive for 6-monoacetylmorphine.
