A cat with exfoliative dermatitis and weight loss was diagnosed with thymoma-associated feline exfoliative dermatitis. Surgical removal of the thymoma led to resolution of skin signs, indicating a direct link.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Dermatology
- Oncology
Background:
- Exfoliative dermatitis in cats can be challenging to diagnose.
- Thymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome.
Observation:
- A 7-year-old domestic shorthair cat presented with generalized exfoliative dermatitis, lethargy, anorexia, and weight loss.
- Initial skin scrapings were non-diagnostic.
- Skin histopathology suggested sebaceous adenitis or thymoma-associated exfoliative dermatitis.
Findings:
- Thoracic radiographs identified a cranial mediastinal mass, confirmed as thymoma via surgical removal and histopathology.
- Post-surgical resolution of cutaneous signs within 90 days strongly suggested a causal link.
- Thymoma recurrence was noted 24 months post-surgery.
Implications:
- This case highlights the importance of investigating underlying causes for severe dermatological conditions in cats.
- Surgical intervention for thymoma can lead to remission of associated paraneoplastic skin disease.
- Monitoring for thymoma recurrence is crucial after initial treatment.

Papillary Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.

The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...
