Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Robotic Surgery

Background:

  • Robot-assisted endoscopic transaxillary thyroidectomy is an emerging surgical technique.
  • Evaluation in European patient cohorts is needed.
  • This study assesses the technique in a French university hospital.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility and preliminary outcomes of robot-assisted transaxillary thyroidectomy.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of this technique in European patients.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 23 consecutive patients.
  • Procedures performed between September 2010 and June 2012.
  • Includes total thyroidectomies and lobectomies.

Main Results:

  • All procedures were completed successfully with a mean operative time of 134 minutes.
  • One case of internal jugular vein injury occurred; no persistent complications.
  • Minor postoperative events in 5 patients; diagnoses included benign adenomas, thyroiditis, and Graves' disease.

Conclusions:

  • Robot-assisted thyroid surgery is feasible and safe for selected European patients.
  • The technique demonstrates infrequent minor complications.
  • High patient satisfaction is achieved with this robotic approach.
