    Background:

    • Kidneys are crucial for thyroid hormone metabolism, converting thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3).
    • Abnormal thyroid function tests are common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze thyroid function in CKD patients.
    • To correlate thyroid function with the severity of kidney disease.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty CKD patients were divided into three groups based on creatinine clearance.
    • Thyroid profiles (total T3, free T3, total T4, free T4, TSH) were measured.
    • Results were compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls.

    Main Results:

    • 70% of CKD patients had abnormal thyroid function.
    • Significantly reduced levels of total T3, free T3, total T4, and free T4 were observed in CKD patients compared to controls.
    • Significantly higher TSH levels were found in CKD patients.
    • Thyroid function abnormalities worsened as creatinine clearance decreased.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroid dysfunction is prevalent in CKD patients.
    • Thyroid hormone levels decrease and TSH levels increase with increasing renal failure severity.
