Summary

Lindane (gamma-hexachlorcyclohexane) treatment for scabies in mothers can significantly increase lindane concentration in breast milk. This finding raises concerns about infant exposure to this neurotoxic pesticide through breastfeeding.

Background:

  • Lindane (gamma-hexachlorcyclohexane) is a pesticide used to treat scabies.
  • Neurotoxic effects in infants treated with lindane have been reported, leading to controversy regarding its use in early infancy.
  • Previous literature lacks data on lindane concentrations in human milk following maternal scabies treatment.

Observation:

  • This study monitored lindane levels in breast milk of a mother treated for scabies.
  • Elevated lindane concentrations were detected in the mother's milk post-treatment.

Findings:

  • Lindane levels in breast milk showed a 30-fold increase after three days of treatment.
  • A further increase to a 66-fold elevation was observed after an additional day of treatment, compared to average levels (0.03 ppm, milk-fat).
