Abstract:
SUMMARY Some lesbians subject other queer women to a type of purity test, stereotyping bisexuals, transsexuals, and leatherwomen as threats to the lesbian and feminist movements. Such attitudes frequently reveal rigid, binary, either-or thinking and an intolerance of difference. This essay, by contrast, argues in favor of an embrace of diversity within the queer women's community and examines the way bisexuals, transsexuals, and leatherwomen exhibit a resistance to binary thinking and a "tolerance for ambiguity."
