    Summary

Computerized axiography reliably measures the sagittal condylar path inclination angle (CPIA), crucial for virtual articulator simulations. This reliability is consistent across patients regardless of their dentition status.

    Area of Science:

    • Dental Mechanics
    • Prosthodontics
    • Biomedical Engineering

    Background:

    • Accurate simulation of oral conditions in virtual articulators requires precise recording of the mandibular hinge axis and posterior determinants.
    • Computerized axiography offers a method for measuring condylar path inclination angle (CPIA).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the reliability of computerized condylar path inclination angle (CPIA) measurements.
    • To determine if measurement reliability is influenced by the patient's mandibular dentition status.

    Main Methods:

    • Sagittal and transverse CPIA were measured using computerized axiography (Cadiax Compact 2) in prosthodontic patients across three sessions.
    • Patients were categorized into fully dentate, partially dentate, and edentulous groups.
    • Reliability was assessed using multilevel analyses with linear random-intercept models.

    Main Results:

    • Patient-specific differences accounted for 75% of the variance in sagittal CPIA and 38% in transverse CPIA, indicating overall reliability.
    • Mandibular dentition status did not significantly impact the reliability of either sagittal or transverse CPIA measurements.
    • Sagittal CPIA demonstrated satisfactory reliability, while transverse CPIA showed poor reliability.

    Conclusions:

    • Electronic determination of sagittal CPIA using computerized axiography is a reliable procedure for prosthodontic patients.
    • The reliability of sagittal CPIA measurements is independent of the patient's dentition status.
    • Transverse CPIA measurements exhibit poor reliability and should be interpreted with caution.
