Psychological Responses to Stress

Psychological responses to stress encompass the various cognitive and emotional reactions individuals experience when faced with challenging or threatening situations, such as a job loss. Prolonged exposure to stressors can disturb emotional balance, increasing negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and sadness) and diminishing positive emotions (e.g., joy and satisfaction). Area of Science:

  • Perinatal mental health
  • Trauma studies
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Approximately 50% of women report traumatic childbirth experiences.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects at least 3.1% of women six months postpartum.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively examine predictors of birth-related trauma.
  • To identify factors associated with developing PTSD after childbirth.
  • To inform the development of a screening questionnaire for at-risk women.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective longitudinal study of 933 women assessed in their third trimester.
  • Follow-up assessment at 4-6 weeks postpartum for 866 women.
  • Canonical discriminant function analyses to identify predictive factors.

Main Results:

  • 16 pre-birth and event-specific variables predicted trauma symptoms.
  • 14 predictor variables distinguished women who developed PTSD.
  • Anxiety sensitivity, breached expectations, and birth problem severity predicted trauma.
  • Prior trauma was the strongest predictor of PTSD.

Conclusions:

  • Identifying women at risk for birth-related PTSD is crucial.
  • Anxiety sensitivity, unmet expectations, and birth severity predict trauma.
  • Prior trauma is a significant risk factor for PTSD.
  • Brief, cost-effective screening tools are needed.
