Summary

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) showed some working memory (WM) and inhibition challenges. However, most children with ASD did not exhibit deficits in these areas, highlighting significant individual differences.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate working memory (WM) and inhibition in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

  • To examine the relationship between WM/inhibition deficits and other variables like ADHD characteristics and behavioral problems.

Main Methods:

  • A large sample of children aged 8-12 years with and without ASD (IQ > 80) were assessed.
  • Classic experimental tasks, including the n-back task for WM and the stop task for inhibition, were utilized.
  • Parental reports on disruptive behavior and ADHD characteristics were collected.

Main Results:

  • The ASD group exhibited more errors on the n-back task with increased WM load and longer stop signal reaction times on the stop task compared to controls.
  • A small percentage (6%) of the ASD group showed deficits in both WM and inhibition; 71% showed no deficits.
  • Parental reports indicated more conduct problems in children with WM and/or inhibition deficits; ADHD characteristics did not impact performance.

Conclusions:

  • While some children with ASD show WM and inhibition challenges, the majority do not, underscoring significant individual variability.
  • Further research is needed to determine if cognitive domain differences are as informative as diagnostic and general cognitive functioning differences in ASD.
  • Cognitive functioning in children with ASD, even with average or above-average intelligence, displays considerable individual variation.
