Summary

Assisted techniques (AT) for vertebral cementoplasty enhance vertebral height restoration and stability following fractures. This minimally invasive approach combines cement injection with mechanical devices to improve spine biomechanics and reduce complications in patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCF).

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Vertebral compression fractures (VCF) can lead to pain, deformity, and systemic complications.
  • Traditional vertebroplasty offers cement injection for stability and pain relief but lacks height restoration.
  • Assisted techniques (AT) have evolved to address these limitations through mechanical augmentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review assisted techniques (AT) for vertebral cementoplasty.
  • To discuss the evolution from traditional vertebroplasty to AT.
  • To analyze patient selection, procedural techniques, and potential complications of AT.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on assisted techniques for vertebral cementoplasty.
  • Analysis of mechanical devices and systems used for vertebral augmentation.
  • Discussion of indications, contraindications, and complication profiles.

Main Results:

  • AT systems utilize mechanical devices for vertebral height restoration alongside cement injection.
  • These techniques aim to improve spine biomechanics and reduce VCF-related complications.
  • Various AT systems exist with differing cannulas, restoration mechanisms, and costs.

Conclusions:

  • Assisted techniques represent an advancement in vertebral cementoplasty, offering both augmentation and height restoration.
  • Proper patient selection and understanding of procedural nuances are crucial for optimal outcomes.
  • AT can improve outcomes for patients with vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis, metastasis, or trauma.
