Summary

Aphasic individuals struggle with short-term memory tasks due to impaired clustering strategies. This study reveals that aphasics (impaired language processing) show less effective categorization compared to healthy controls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if aphasics' short-term memory impairments stem from a failure to utilize the clustering strategy.
  • To compare the clustering abilities and error rates of aphasics, right hemisphere brain-damaged (RH) individuals, and normal controls.

  • A modified version of the Petrides and Milner (1982) tasks was used.
  • Participants (aphasics, RH-controls, normal controls) performed short-term memory tasks with categorized and non-categorized stimuli.
  • The effect of pre-task categorization instructions versus post-task instructions was examined.
