Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the maturation sequence of nine key brain functional networks in infants.
  • To investigate the correlation between socioeconomic status and functional brain development during the first year of life.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were performed on 65 typically developing infants every three months during their first year.
  • Analysis focused on delineating the maturation sequence of major brain networks and their association with socioeconomic status.

Main Results:

  • A distinct maturation sequence was observed: primary sensorimotor/auditory networks matured first, followed by visual, then attention/default-mode, and finally executive control networks.
  • Critical growth periods were identified for specific networks.
  • Marginally significant positive correlations between socioeconomic status and the sensorimotor and default-mode networks were found at six months of age.

Conclusions:

  • This study provides the first detailed longitudinal trajectories of major functional brain networks and their socioeconomic status correlations in the first year of life.
