The Emergency Triage Education Kit (ETEK) improved paediatric triage documentation and decision-making. This study shows ETEK significantly enhanced inter-rater agreement and triage score accuracy in children.
Area of Science:
- Emergency Medicine
- Paediatric Triage
- Clinical Documentation
Background:
- The Emergency Triage Education Kit (ETEK) was introduced in 2007.
- The impact of ETEK on paediatric triage effectiveness has not been previously measured.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the ETEK on paediatric triage.
- To assess the impact of ETEK on documentation completeness and inter-rater agreement.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart audit of 600 paediatric triage records (2007, 2008, 2010).
- Comparison of documented triage assessments with the Paediatric Physiological Discriminator Table (PPDT) from ETEK.
- Analysis of documentation completeness and inter-rater agreement over time.
Main Results:
- Triage documentation supporting parallel decision-making significantly increased from 2007 (56%) to 2010 (7%) (P<0.001).
- Matched triage scores improved from 54% in 2007 to 72% in 2010 (P=0.01) with enhanced documentation.
- Inter-rater agreement showed improvement over the study period.
Conclusions:
- ETEK significantly impacted paediatric triage in the emergency department, especially when combined with education.
- The Paediatric Physiological Discriminator Table (PPDT) facilitated standardized documentation and parallel decision-making.
- ETEK improved inter-rater agreement for paediatric triage.
