Background:

  • Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition characterized by an urge to move the legs.
  • The prevalence of RLS in MSA patients is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in patients diagnosed with multiple system atrophy (MSA).

Main Methods:

  • The study included 30 patients diagnosed with MSA.
  • Patients were assessed for the presence and severity of RLS symptoms.
  • Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
  • Periodic limb movements during sleep were monitored.

Main Results:

  • Eight out of 30 MSA patients (26.7%) reported symptoms consistent with RLS.
  • The average RLS severity score in affected patients was 19.4 ± 4.1.
