Hand hygiene01:23

Hand hygiene

5.2K
Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Surgical asepsis, or the sterile technique, refers to practices that render and keep objects and areas free of microorganisms.

Inhalational Anesthetics: Overview01:20

Inhalational Anesthetics: Overview

1.7K
Inhalation anesthetics are drugs that induce general anesthesia upon inhalation. They work by increasing the sensitivity of GABAA receptors or inhibiting NMDA receptors, leading to a decrease in central nervous system activity. The depth of anesthesia can be rapidly adjusted by changing the concentration of the inhaled gas. Some common examples of inhalational anesthetics include volatile liquids like isoflurane, desflurane, sevoflurane and gases like xenon and nitrous oxide. Isoflurane, a...

Alkyl Halides02:45

Alkyl Halides

16.7K
Structural Properties
Alkyl halides are halogen-substituted alkanes wherein one or more hydrogen atoms of an alkane is replaced by a halogen atom such as fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine. The carbon atom in an alkyl halide is bonded to the halogen atom, which is sp3-hybridized and exhibits a tetrahedral shape.
Unlike alkyl halides, compounds in which a halogen atom is bonded to an sp2 -hybridized carbon atom of a carbon-carbon double bond (C=C) are called vinyl halides. Whereas aryl...

Parenteral Anesthetics: Overview01:24

Parenteral Anesthetics: Overview

1.0K
Intravenous anesthetics are drugs administered parenterally to induce anesthesia or sedation. Propofol is a widely used agent formulated as a 1% emulsion in soybean oil, glycerol, and egg phosphatide. It induces rapid anesthesia primarily due to its rapid distribution from the bloodstream to target tissues and is metabolized in the liver. However, it can cause significant pain on injection and hypertriglyceridemia. Fospropofol, a water-based prodrug of propofol, lacks these adverse effects.

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings II: Doffing01:10

PPE Use in Healthcare Settings II: Doffing

1.6K
The sequence of removing or doffing PPE starts with the gloves, as they are the most contaminated. Next is removal of the face shield or goggles, as they would interfere with removing other PPE. Then remove the gown, followed by the mask or respirator. Perform hand hygiene between steps if hands become contaminated and immediately after removing all PPE. Generally, the outside front and sleeves of the isolation gown, the goggles or the mask, the respirator, and the face shield are contaminated.

Endotracheal Intubation II: Nursing Management01:17

Endotracheal Intubation II: Nursing Management

3.8K
Endotracheal intubation is a critical procedure that can be lifesaving for many patients with respiratory distress or failure. The role of nursing in managing endotracheal tubes is pivotal, as it involves pre-intubation preparation, assisting during the procedure, and post-extubation care.
1. Nursing Care of Patients Before Intubation
Before the endotracheal intubation procedure, nurses play an essential role in ensuring the process goes smoothly. The nurses must be familiar with intubation...

    Summary

Concurrent exposure to Halothane and dried povidone-iodine solution can cause contact dermatitis in patients. Symptoms resolved upon removal of the povidone-iodine, indicating a specific interaction between the two agents.

    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Anesthesiology
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Povidone-iodine solution is a common antiseptic. Halothane is an inhaled anesthetic agent.
    • A patient previously tolerated povidone-iodine without issue.
    • No prior halogen sensitivity was reported for the patient.

    Discussion:

    • Contact dermatitis developed specifically where povidone-iodine solution dried on the skin during Halothane anesthesia.
    • The dermatitis was localized to the application sites of the povidone-iodine solution.
    • Symptoms resolved after the povidone-iodine solution was removed.

    Key Insights:

    • A specific interaction between dried povidone-iodine and Halothane triggered contact dermatitis.
    • The patient did not react to povidone-iodine alone or Halothane alone.

  • This suggests a synergistic or additive effect causing the adverse reaction.
  • Outlook:

    • Further investigation into the chemical interaction between povidone-iodine and Halothane is warranted.
    • Clinicians should be aware of this potential interaction in surgical settings.
    • Consider alternative antiseptics or anesthetic agents in susceptible patients.
