Metal hypersensitivity in total joint replacement: review of the literature and practical guidelines for evaluating
Abstract:
Metal hypersensitivity may play a role in total joint failure. This review elaborates on contact sensitivity to metals, and critically analyzes evidence for and against the role of metal hypersensitivity in the failure of total joint replacement. Finally, we attempt to set practical guidelines by which the orthopedic surgeon can rule out metal hypersensitivity prior to implantation of a first prosthesis or for revision surgery.
